in order of appearance in melissa’s life

katherine wong

Katherine and I could not be any more different. Growing up, we could never share closets, the TV, or taste in food. Now, we even live on opposite coasts, and she is a chef while I am a scientist. Although we are so different from one another, we always have found ways to spend time together. As kids, we enjoyed making up stories about our polar bear stuffed animals named Cokie and Cola. As high schoolers, we always went to the movies and stuffed our faces full of popcorn and soda. Now, that we live so far away from each other, our moments spent together are few and precious, but I always feel home when I’m with my sister.

amanda moon
I have known Amanda basically since she was born! Our friendship started in middle school, and she has been a source of encouragement and support ever since! I love how easy she is to talk to, how I don’t feel afraid of telling her anything, and how I can always count on her to tell me the truth. I also can always count on her to photographically capture every moment we spend together. Seriously, I don’t think anyone has more pictures of me than Amanda does.

tina huang

I remember meeting Tina in the girls’ locker room after gym class in the 6th grade. It was a pretty awkward way to meet someone especially since I was a self conscious 6th grader who was trying to change out of my gym clothes as fast I could without anyone seeing me. Tina and I ended up having many more classes together, and we grew close through our shared sense of humor and faith in God. Tina has always been someone that I know I can go to for support in times of good and bad.

julia fukuizumi

I met Julia my freshman year at UCLA, and she was my roommate for two years. This woman is so ridiculously patient and easygoing. She endured two years of sharing a room that included my messy desk and a cluttered closet. Throughout college and beyond, Julia has always been there for me through all the school stress and boy drama. She also has an amazing sense of style and is super crafty. It’s always fun shopping with her and bouncing wedding ideas off of her.

christina lui
Christina lived on the same floor as me during my freshman year at UCLA. I spent many hours that year chatting it up with Christina instead of studying for chemistry. She and I have the most ridiculous and fun conversations about anything and everything. I know I can always count on Christina to listen to my whiny rants, to lament with me about the state of UCLA football, to get excited over Billy Joel playing on the radio, and to convince me not to quit grad school.

simon teng
I’ve looked up to Simon ever since I was zero years old.  He played tennis, so I played tennis.  He played squash so I played squash.  He made friends, I stole friends from him.  We’re on opposite coasts now.  We’re grown up too.  But in my head at least, we’re still the same two brothers playing computer games in our room.

kelvin su
Kelvin is an example of a friend I stole from Simon as referenced above.  I’ve known him since middle school in Hong Kong.  We played high school soccer together.  Now we’re old and play video game soccer together.

justin shum
Justin is a friend from college.  He’s one of the funniest people dan knows.  Their friendship was forged on battle.net, where together they climbed to the top 140 of the 2v2 warcraft west coast rankings.

billy pan
Dan is awkward.  Billy is awkward.  And together, their interactions are painfully awkward.  But they fight through that awkwardness every time they hang out because they know they’re good friends and its worth it.  Billy is probably one of the nicest guys out there.  He’s also studying to be a doctor.  And single.  And does good, like helps out at orphanages.

johan lam
Johan is Dan’s friend and roommate from college.  It is amazing that Johan is still friends with Dan, because Dan is the most annoying roommate possible.  So that says a lot about Johan.
